A Palestinian man has been shot dead by Israeli forces in Kiryat Arba, following his alleged attempt to stab a solider at a checkpoint near the entrance of illegal settlement in the occupied west city of Hebron. The Palestinian health ministry confirmed the man shot dead was, Wael Abdulfattah al-Jabbari, 28.
He was killed on the entrance of Kiryat Arba, a Jewish settlement on the eastern outskirts of Hebron. However, there were no other causalities reported in the incident. Besides, as reported by local media, a Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance was stopped by the Israeli forces who had blocked the area.
Kirya Arba homes a few hundred Jewish settlers who live under heavy army guard, and with thousand other Palestinians. Settlements are illicit under the international law, and are a foremost stabbing point for peace efforts between Israel and Palestinians.
“A Palestinian assailant approached an Israeli security crossing near Kiryat Arba … with a knife in his hand. In response, IDF troops neutralized the assailant,” the Israeli military said in a statement.
The footage of the alleged attack circulated by local news media outlets and social media showed the al-Jaabari’s body lying on the floor, with blood spill all over and surrounded by Israeli soldiers and settlers.
According to people at ground zero, the body was then loaded in to an army vehicle that left for an unknown location. The alleged attacker left behind his wife and two children, whose house is only a few meters away from the settlement.
The incident though shocked a number of local and international human rights groups, who have put up a question on Israeli forces, and there course of action to ‘shoot and kill’, when confronting Palestinians.
Shooting and killing of civilians won’t solve the purpose, however given the frailty of the situation, it is only fair that both the sides consider peace policy as the best alternative reach a common conclusion. The Israeli soldiers were permitted to open-fire regulation in 2015, on those throwing stones or initiating any kind of war.
