President of the US, Donald Trump, who often bashes everyone, and believes that only he has the knack of doing things in a right way, tasted his own medicine after Iraq’s President, Barham Salih rebuked him over his statement. Salih’s comments came after the US president showcased his will to keep an eye on Iran. In his interview with CBS on Sunday, Trump said, he desired of keeping an “incredible” base being used by the US troops to fight jihadist group Islamic State “because I want to be looking a little bit at Iran”.
The comments also showcase the US President’s habit of maintaining a relationship with his allies to derive some personal benefits. Salih, meanwhile, confirmed that the US had not taken Iraq’s permit to do so and that it should stick to combating terrorism and not pursue other agendas.
In the same interview, Trump also defended his absurd call of withdrawing the troops from Syria. Further boasting about his troops moving to the huge Al Asad Airbase in Iraq, he stated, “We spent a fortune on building this incredible base. We might as well keep it.” “And one of the reasons I want to keep it is because I want to be looking a little bit at Iran because Iran is a real problem,” “he added.
Trump was asked if the same troops would strike Iran if required, to which he stated, “All I want to do is be able to watch.”
The problem with the comments, however, is that according to the 2008 US-Iraq Strategic Framework Agreement, Washington has concurred not to use Iraq “as a launching or transit point for attacks against other countries”.
The statement also alleges if Trump was trying to cover up his absurd decisions by showing concern towards securing his borders from Iran, labeled as the biggest sponsor of terrorism by the US. Correspondingly, if the move is really implemented, it could lead to a diplomatic row between the two nations over the use of the Airbase, which the US would want to avoid.
Border security and Trump’s involvement with the troops have also been centric to Congress for more than a while now. The US President often states that it is his work that is making America great again. The latest and the best example of which, is the longest shutdown observed recently in his Presidency.
