The US conference on the Middle East in Poland, which was directed towards establishing peace in the Arab region, attracted a lot of attention. However, what was real US agenda for choosing Poland, even when the Central European nation has no deep involvement in the Gulf region?
Also, with the US pro-actively involved in the Middle East region, Iran is livid with continuous US claims that it is the biggest sponsor of terrorism. Was demeaning Iran the purpose of the world leaders gathering in the Polish capital?
The answer to which, looks like a big yes. The US vice-president, Mike Pence, rebuked the US’ European allies, while taking a dig at Iran. He conveyed that the efforts made by their European counterparts downplay the role of the US sanctions, and quoted “It is an ill-advised step that will only strengthen Iran, weaken the EU and create still more distance between Europe and the US.”
The Warsaw meeting was attended by more than 60 countries, but the big European nations, such as France and Germany, did not even send their top diplomats.
“You can’t achieve stability in the Middle East without confronting Iran. It’s just not possible,” Pompeo told reporters. “There are malign influences in Lebanon, Yemen, Syria and Iraq … The three H’s: the Houthis, Hamas and Hezbollah, these are real threats,” he said, referring to groups Iran supports.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Javad Zarif, earlier criticized the Middle East conference, stating that it is just “another attempt by the United States to pursue an obsession with Iran”. The statement came after hundreds of demonstrators gathered on Wednesday and protested against the Iranian government demanding “regime change”.
Zarif, at a news conference in Tehran, condemned the two-day Warsaw meeting, saying that it “was dead on arrival”.
Further expressing Poland Meeting as the “Warsaw Circus”, Zarif said it was “no coincidence that Iran is hit by terror on the very day” the talks began in the Polish capital. “Especially when cohorts of same terrorists cheer it from Warsaw streets & support it with twitter bots? US seems to always make the same wrong choices, but expect different results,” Zarif wrote on Twitter.
On the other hand, choosing Europe and Poland as the destination also signaled that the US wanted to portray that its alliance with the European nations is still far from over. This is especially because E3 (Germany, France, and the UK) is reportedly working to downplay the US’ importance in trading with Iran, and have pledged to help Iran from the US sanctions.
The gathering in Warsaw proposed by the US was thus clearly aimed at increasing pressure on Iran. However, to settle the debate, the US started invoking peace and stability as the main agendas of the gathering.
Palestine earlier refused the invitation and said they won’t attend the conference. The decision was made in light of US’ decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, disrupting any prospect of achieving a two-state solution.
Therefore, it remains to be seen what the US exactly has to offer for Palestine, with more than 5 decades of war already shocking the world to its core.
The question is, was peace really the purpose of the meeting, or did the Trump’s administration call the event in Warsaw to boast about the power America possesses in the Middle East, and especially when it comes to dominating Iran.
