Garbage Spat Sees Philippines Repatriate Ambassador to Canada

Leaving waste in Manila, Canadian President Justin Trudeau completely forgot about the responsibility he took over towards safeguarding the environment. More than 5 years since Manila first requested Canada to take the garbage shipment back, Philippines has recalled its ambassador to the country, retaliating to its ignorance over the issue.

The Philippines’ foreign secretary said, Canada missed a May 15 deadline to retrieve rubbish out of the nation. Even last month, Pilipino President Rodrigo Duterte said, he would “sail to Canada and dump their garbage there”.

Not only the President, more than 100 communities and environmental groups in the nation have already urged Trudeau to take the garbage out of the nation. In February, the groups coming under the banner of EcoWaste, wrote a letter asking the Canadian President to deliver on the promise he made during his 2017 visit.

“At midnight last night, letters for the recall of our ambassador and consults to Canada went out,” Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Teddy Locsin Jr. said in a tweet. “Canada missed the… deadline. And we shall maintain a diminished diplomatic presence in Canada until its garbage is ship bound there,” the secretary added.

As per Manila’s claims, the containers arrived at their port labelled as containing plastic. However, upon examination it was found that they contained household and other hazardous waste.

The dispute between two sides has a clear winner in Manila. Yet, if Canada thinks otherwise, it must take into account the case of South Korea, which took back their 50 containers after they were shipped mistakenly last year.

Dumping waste has been a continuous problem for nations around the globe, with a concern of how and where it actually ends up. However, the present concern is about the dumping of rotten waste in Manila, to settle the ‘rubbish’ mayhem that has been both, initiated and escalated because of Trudeau’s stint.
