What Could Trudeau-Opposition Meeting Post Elections Mean?

Post winning Canadian elections and forming the minority government, the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau, will hold one-on-meetings with House of Commons party leaders.

The meetups will be held in the week of November 11, as per the spokesperson in Prime Minister’s office (PMO) and the scheduling is already underway. Trudeau’s decisions will be made public on November 20, the date for revealing the new cabinet.

Conservative leader Andrew Scheer, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, Green Party leader Elizabeth May and Bloc Québécois leader Yves-François Blanchet, have been contacted, PMO confirmed.

Justin Trudeau won the elections last month, but fell 13 short of the 170 mark needed to form majority in the House of Commons. However, having already ruled out formation of a coalition government—one that could see members of other parties named to cabinet positions — after Liberal party lost seats, the nexus of the conversations is expected to be on things raised in post-election conference.

This includes, finding common grounds, representing Western Canada, moving ahead on environmental protections and the way forward to make life more affordable for the Canadians.

As of now, NDP has confirmed that Jagmeet Singh will meet Trudeau. However, the former has already been vocal about the demands and has vowed for a staunch commitment to environmental issues and pharmacare, which remain non-negotiable for securing the NDP’s support.

After the Canadian elections result, Trudeau cited that he would “really reflect on how best to serve Canadians and work with other parties.” This was a direct implication that though the PM seeks co-operation, he wants to fashion a cabinet best suited to his minority government.

Clearly, it is not easy to form a second government – a minority or majority. As the time to answer every question draws closer, even the prime minister’s anxiety is expected to rise. However, it also best presents Justin Trudeau with another opportunity to prove his mettle to Canadians, especially to those who still have lingering doubts in his ability.
